Help:Wiki forums

From Evonypedia

Evonypedia has a Wiki forums extension installed. It performs two main functions:

  • Transcluding the talk page associated with wiki page viewed, and stylizing it to appear as a forum.
  • Adding inline comments from the forum to the talk page with the appropriate indentation.

Posting comments

There are two ways to post comments to the forum (and more ways from the talk page): by the post button and the reply button. Clicking these buttons will open a form for in-place comment posting.

Post button
This is always the first button in the forum, even if there are no posts yet and the forum is not displayed. Use this button to post a new comment to the forum rather than replying to some other comment.
When you click the POST button you have to enter both your message subject and the contents, and then click SUBMIT to post the comment. The comment will be posted after all the other comments.
Reply button
This button appears at the end of every comment discussion exchange. Your reply should address the comment subject, otherwise start a new comment using the POST button.
When you click the REPLY button you are only given a form to enter your reply message. The subject is the same subject as the first comment in the exchange. click SUBMIT to post the comment. The comment will appear after all the other comments in this exchange, before the next comment with a different subject.

Signatures

When you post comments through the forum, you do not need to sign your comment, since it will be automatically generated for you.

You do, however, need an image associated with your profile. Upload an image that you want to be shown for you avatar and name it with your username: Username-Avatar.png. The image may be a png, gif, or jpg. The image displayed will be small, so do not upload a large image. This image may be the same that is on your user page.

Editing comments

It is not possible to edit comments through the Forum interface. It is however possible to show edit links per subject comments for all comments regardless of the poster by removing the __NOEDITSECTION__ on the associated talk page. Clicking on the edit link will let you edit the entire comment exchange in the associated talk page, hence if you preview your changes it will not look like a forum as it does on the wiki page. The edit links are therefore disabled by default.

In order to edit comments, please view them in the associated talk page by clicking on Read comments at the top menu. Locate your comment and edit it, previewing before saving if necessary. Please remember all the talk page editing guides for etiquette and layout. Particularly, there are only few cases where it is considered acceptable to edit another user's comments.

Displaying the forum

The forum is going to be shown automatically on all pages in the “(Main)” namespace. It is also possible to display the forum in pages outside that namespace, or disable the forum for pages in the namespace using the following wikitext:

<comments /> - Shows the forum on the current page at the location where the tag is inserted.
<nocomments /> - Do not show the forum on the current page at any location.

  Tip for wiki admins: Assign an array of namespaces to the variable $wgArticleCommentsNSDisplayList in LocalSettings.php to change the namespaces where the forum will display automatically. For example, to specify that all user pages should have forums as well set: $wgArticleCommentsNSDisplayList[] = NS_USER;

Special uses

You can create a forum page out of a wiki page by just creating an empty article with only a category. Then that page will act as a forum page with the title you gave the empty article.

You may have forum articles group together if you wish, or you may even create a separate Forum namespace for forum comments. However, arguably the most effective use of the forum is in conjunction with the wiki. Comparing with traditional forum threads, the wiki article will be the original poster's comment, while the forum will be made of comments that are not appropriate to add to the originating wiki article, since they contribute nothing to the article accuracy or detail. Nevertheless, those comments can be valuable in the thread.[[Category:]] [[Category:]] [[Category:]][[Category:]] [[Category:]] [[Category:]] [[Category:]] [[Category:]]
