Some dirty little secrets about alliance membership...
Without a doubt, alliances are a major component of play in the Evony universe. To some people, they comprise the single most important part of the game. And, certainly, it's a mistake for any beginning player not to join an alliance while still in BP, because of the several distinct and tangible benefits one receives from membership at that early stage of player development.
Later on in the game, however, the "dirty little secret" of alliance membership is that it is almost always of no benefit whatsoever to the majority of players. In fact, it can often be the case that an experienced and relatively strong player will stay in an alliance not because of the benefits from staying but, rather, on account of the penalties for leaving! Because, by resigning from one you will not only lose 10% of your prestige, but you will also run the risk of being targeted by your former allies for having snubbed the alliance.
As was already mentioned, beginning players benefit from joining an alliance. Simply because the game rewards them for completing that quest and with subsequent prestige points awarded for initial alliance growth.
After BP, however, if a player doesn't fall into one of two subsets within the alliance, he or she will gradually wake up to the fact that somewhere along the way, membership ceased to have its benefits.
Alliance Leadership... As the old saying goes, "Rank hath its privileges," (aka "RHIP"). The folks with positions in an alliance are always (repeat: always) going to come first. Depending on how strong or weak the alliance is, there may not even be a "second" - the leaders might be the only people getting looked out for by the alliance. This isn't necessarily because the big shots are selfish jerks or bad people. It's simply because there are only so many troops and resources that even the biggest players can spread around. And it's also because, when an officer or above is attacked, that's treated as a personal affront to the alliance that must be avenged. To get a position, it always helps to be a kiss-up or social butterfly (see below). And you need to consider this a war game, first and foremost. Then you must attack those red flags as often as possible.
Kiss-Ups & Social Butterflies... Human nature is what it is and there's no getting away from it. That certainly goes for here in the world of Evony. The more you chat and the more you fawn over the host, the better your chances for not only getting promotion but also for getting reinforced or avenged, during or after you get attacked. (Sidebar: the weird but constant thing about alliance chat is the fact that hosts will always draw a direct correlation between between how often you chat and your "loyalty" to the alliance.
Otherwise... If you haven't yet seen yourself described here, then you're probably going to come to see alliance membership as a hindrance, not a help, after you've matured as a player. Realize that, if you're not as described above, then the higher your prestige gets the less you will want to be in an alliance. You could very easily find yourself trapped in one - with the only way out being to resign despite the blowback you may suffer from doing so.
If you are approaching 7-digits of prestige and haven't been offered a position yet, then you never will be. Rightly or wrongly, you've been branded as someone who either doesn't fit in socially or one who hasn't contributed enough to the alliance. If you try to suddenly do more or if you start pointing out things you do that maybe were going unrecognized, the host will likely suspect your motives or consider it too little too late. Hosts will proudly point to you as an example of how "Just because someone has high prestige doesn't mean I will promote them." You may even be considered a wimpy "prestige farmer." But that same prestige helps boost the alliance in the rankings - so forget about asking to be booted. You are a virtual prisoner.
In Conclusion... This article is in no way meant to be an attack on either the Evony alliance system or on any particular alliance. Rather, it is meant to be
